"Chemi, the Magician was one of my favorites. I read and reread it multiple times, and it's always stuck in my memory."
— Lynn Mruczak (USA)

One of Ruth's early hobbies was chemistry. She became interested in it at age 8, when curiosity prompted her to pull out one of her father's chemistry books from a living room shelf. So her dad, a chemistry teacher, began giving her lessons. Her younger sister, Bunny (also a Quiz Kid), watched their experiments and begged Ruth to teach her. Ruth decided to write a book about chemical magic for Bunny with their father's help and advice. Thus was born Chemi, the Magician, a children's science fiction adventure story published by Dodd, Mead, and Company in 1947, when Ruth was 13.

"...a terribly moving series of portraits of those precocious children who became premature celebrities." — Studs Terkel

"...a fascinating look at the lives of child prodigies. . . a longitudinal study of gifted children that is sincerely told."
— Deborah Earle (USA)

The Quiz Kids radio and television program was a national institution in the 1940s and 1950s. Ruth and a few other Quiz Kid "regulars" made guest appearances on the Jack Benny, Fred Allen, and Eddie Cantor shows, starred in Paramount movie shorts, and traveled all over the United States selling war bonds during World War II.

Did the Quiz Kids fulfill their youthful promise? What were the fruits — bitter and sweet — of their childhood experience? What are the lessons for gifted children today? The answers can be found in Whatever Happened to the Quiz Kids? (Chicago Review Press, 1982; iUniverse, 2000).
